Simple Facts about Arabic

Arabic is widely spoken across the Middle East and North Africa. There are about 295 million native speakers of Arabic around the world. It has three different forms: Classical, Modern Standard and Colloquial. Classical Arabic is the oldest form, spoken mainly from the 7th to the 9th centuries. Today, Modern Standard Arabic is the official form, although different varieties are used in different areas.

Things to note:
  • There are 28 letters in the Arabic alphabet and it is written from right to left in a cursive style.
  • Dots above or below the central parts of the same basic shape represent different letters.
