Project Background:

Established in 1856, Smith & Nephew plc headquartered in London is the world’s largest manufacturer of arthroscopy products, the second largest manufacturer of advanced trauma management products, the third largest manufacturer of trauma and clinical physiotherapy products and the fourth largest manufacturer of orthopedic reconstruction products. Listed on both the London and the New York Stock Exchanges, the company has branches in 32 countries and its products are sold in over 90 countries around the world.

The project undertaken for our overseas partner required training materials composed of 20 courses for Smith & Nephew’s endoscopy salespersons to be translated from English into Spanish and simplified Chinese.

Our Challenge:

Only linguists who are knowledgeable about medical equipment, especially endoscopes and have expertise in marketing could deal with the large quantity of technical terms and ensure the accuracy of the translation.

The client required Trados to be the only translation tool applied, and that deliveries were to contain all project files including drafts, reviews and edited documents. Therefore, linguists from translators to proofreaders participating in this project needed to be skilled in the application of Trados.

Our Solutions:

  • We appointed a PM to choose linguists, arrange and coordinate the project, update the translation memory and check the integrity of the files delivered.
  • The PM selected linguists who have expertise in medical equipment and specially appointed a translator from our financial translation team to ensure accuracy of the marketing content in the translations.
  • We created and maintained a terminology database and translation memory for the project to ensure term consistency and speed up the translation process.

Conclusion:

Our highly qualified translation not only met the requirements of our partner but was also welcomed by the end users in their respective target markets. The client has given our service an excellent rating level, setting the foundation for a closer partnership between MTS and the client and long term cooperation.
